Avenue D, license bureau on Katy city agenda

Katy City Council members will meet Monday, November 23, to consider a $2.4 million contract to reconstruct Avenue D and a lease extension for the driver’s license bureau in the V.F.W. Community Building.

Council members also will consider using reserve funds to purchase a new $499,904 pumper truck for the Fire Department, as well as a $16,912 filing system for the Municipal Court Building.

The council postponed action on extending the Texas Department of Public Safety’s lease for the driver’s license bureau last May, after complaints that the location at 6202 George Bush Drive had become crowded and unsafe.

Officials from Katy Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9182 said parking is inadequate and the location combines inexperienced drivers with nearby park patrons and nursing home residents. The VFW also wants the 960 square feet to enlarge its veterans’ museum, which shares the same community building.

The new lease would be for 12 months, from January 1 to December 31, 2010, for $856.22 per month.

City staff members recommended the contract for concrete paving of Avenue D go to ReyTec Construction Resources Inc. of Houston. The contract includes storm sewers, sidewalks and sanitary sewer lines.

With a related water line replacement, surveying and engineering, the total project cost comes to $3.4 million. The city received 13 bids.

In other items on the agenda, council members will consider:

    • A resolution supporting Sealy’s attempts to regain a federal contract for BAE System’s Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles. The U.S. Army has announced plans to move the longstanding contract to Wisconsin.
    • An ordinance allowing Katy to become a Tree City USA.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at Katy City Hall, 910 Avenue C.
