Katy Prairie fun event needs volunteers

The Katy Prairie Conservancy is putting out an urgent call for volunteers to help with its “Flat Out Fun Day” on Saturday November 14, an annual outdoor event that highlights the plants, animals and other wonders of the Katy Prairie.

Flat Out Fun Day will be held this year at the KPC’s Nelson Farms Preserve northwest of Katy. Volunteers are needed to help with eight educational stations where children and other visitors can learn about birds, sweep for insects, or net critters in the crawfish pond.

“This is our big, open house event,” says public relations coordinator Morgan Blackburn. “We need lots of volunteers.”

Hayrides and live animal demonstrations will be part of the day. At one station, volunteers will help visitors make prairie seed balls that will be used to restore prairie tracts.

“It’s a bit messy, but kids love it,” says Blackburn. “Who doesn’t love a good mud pie?”

Two shifts are available, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The conservancy will provide simple on-site training the day of the event, and match helpers with activities that relate to their interests.

Interested? More questions? Call KPC at 713-523-6135 or e-mail info@katyprairie.org.

The Katy Prairie Conservancy is dedicated to preserving and sharing the Katy Prairie with the general public. KPC’s Nelson Farms Preserve is a working rice farm that includes wetlands, forest and a wide variety of wildlife and plant life.
