McWhorter Gallery Presents “Go Photo” group exhibit March 12
(HOUSTON) McWhorter Gallery will take on a new look in March. Instead of displaying its usual paintings and sculpture, the gallery will feature a show devoted to photography. The exhibit celebrates FotoFest 2010 Biennial, an international exhibition of photography and photo-related arts taking place throughout Houston March 12 through March 26, 2010.
Several Houston painters, including Van McFarland, Justin Garcia, John Painter, Anne-Joelle Galley and Belinda Smith, were asked to put down their brushes and pick up cameras for McWhorter Gallery’s “Go Photo” exhibit. An opening reception will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 12 at the gallery’s 2119 Canal Street location.
Lindsay Peyton, gallery’s director, said, “FotoFest is one of those amazing events that makes me so proud to be from Houston. I wanted to honor this amazing event and also to participate in it -- hopefully, in an unusual way.”
Artists were encouraged either to submit framed photos or to incorporate their photos into a painting. Peyton and gallery owner Taft McWhorter also invited some Houston photographers to join the show, including Mariam Khalili, Paul Ladd, Tom Kilty, Carrie Sellars and Billy Miller.
“I can’t wait to see the results of this challenge,” McWhorter said. “We are thrilled to participate in FotoFest.”
McWhorter Gallery will donate 10 percent of the sales from the exhibit to Project GRAD USA (GRAD), a nonprofit education reform model striving to increase high school and college graduation rates for low-income students. Grad serves 132,000 economically disadvantaged youth in 217 schools across the nation. More than 90 percent of GRAD students are low-income and 91 percent are minorities. The national Project GRAD model grew out of a partnership with the Houston Independent School District in 1989.
McWhorter Gallery is an exhibition space featuring Houston artists. The gallery also offers consulting services for artists, as well as an art rental program for area businesses.
