New volunteers are needed at Houston Audubon's Edith L. Moore (E.L.M.) Nature Sanctuary in west Houston. A free volunteer orientation program will be held on Saturday, February 27, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., in the log cabin at the sanctuary at 440 Wilchester Blvd. The program will include an overview of volunteer opportunities, an introduction to the history and ecology of the nature sanctuary, and a tour of the sanctuary and Houston Audubon headquarters. Volunteer opportunities are available weekdays, evenings, and weekends, and the commitment is as little as 2 hours a month. Volunteer activities include helping with sanctuary nature programs (tours of the sanctuary, preschooler nature story hours, nature-themed birthday parties, nature camps, outreach programs at schools and libraries, and owl prowls), habitat restoration, assisting at High Island for the spring migration, planning galas and fundraising, helping out in the office, and staffing festival and outreach booths . This orientation program is free but reservations are required; call 713-464-4900 or e-mail docent@houstonaudubon.org to reserve your spot or obtain further information. Visit www.houstonaudubon.org for information on Houston Audubon activities.
