No candidates filed to challenge three incumbents up for reelection to the Katy City Council.
Ward A Councilwoman Carol Adams, Ward B Councilman Larry Gore, and Mayor Pro Tem Hank Schmidt, who holds an at-large spot, all will be unopposed in the May 8 election.
That’s typical, says Gore.
“If a councilmember is being receptive to the needs of the residents, they usually don’t see an opponent,” says Gore. “It’s a tight-knit community. You have to have a reason to go against an incumbent here. ”
Gore said term limits are another reason there are few contested races in the city of Katy. Unless there are unusual circumstances, voters know their elected officials are limited to three consecutive two-year terms.
It’s not apathy, he said. “It means everybody is doing alright!”
City Secretary Missy Bunch said write-in candidates have until next Monday, March 15, to file their intentions. If there are no write-in candidates, Bunch said the usual procedure is for the City Council to cancel the election. That would save the city about $15,000, she said.
