Katy police uncovered outstanding theft warrants and two prior convictions July 20, after picking up an accused shoplifter.
Police were called to Burlington Coat Factory about 6 p.m. by security officials who reported that a man had run from the store when they confronted him. Security officials told police they saw the man stash clothing in a shopping bag and then leave without paying, said Assistant Police Chief Tim Tyler.
When a suspect was apprehended a short time later, police said he gave them a false name and date of birth. Eventually, police determined the man had outstanding arrest warrants and two prior convictions.
A misdemeanor theft charge was enhanced to a felony against Roger Hall, 20, of Houston, because of the prior convictions. Hall also was charged with failing to identify himself to police, which is a Class A misdemeanor when a fugitive is involved, Tyler said. He was taken to the Fort Bend County Jail.
Katy Police also issued a citation to Luis Gomez, 23, of Houston, for failing to stop and give information in connection with a collision that took place in the 5600 block of Highway 90 about 2 p.m. on July 21.
The other motorist said a grey four-door vehicle left after the collision without leaving contact and insurance information. As police were in the process of towing that vehicle later from a nearby parking lot, the owner approached police and acknowledged being in the accident, Tyler said.
Two Katy-area residents were picked up July 23 at Wal-Mart for public intoxication and taken to the Katy jail. Julliana Ortega, 20, and Pierre Johnson, 26, were both charged with the misdemeanor offense.
And police arrested Cody Smith, 18, of Katy for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after residents near the 1900 block of Drexel reported a man opening mail boxes.
According to the police report, when officers responded to the complaint and made an arrest, they found a glass pipe with marijuana residue in the suspect’s pants pocket. Smith was taken to the Katy jail.
Police also issued citations for Class C theft under $50 to Desiree Robinson, 20, of Houston in connection with a shoplifting complaint at Burlington Coat Factory involving a $9.99 pair of yellow shoes, and to Stephan Johnson, 19, of Katy, in connection with a complaint from Wal-Mart involving T-shirts. Both incidents occurred July 24.
Katy police worked these cases along with investigating a July 22 sexual assault, July 19, 20 and 25 home burglaries and a July 23 theft valued from $1,500 to $20,000. Police do not provide details on open cases.
