    Katy ISD is the biggest employer in the area with about 8,300 employees. According to a story on CNN Money, local school districts account for high job growth in Fort Bend County providing more than 14,000 positions. This puts the county at No. 5 on a list of 25 counties nationwide with vigorous job growth.

    What would the Katy area be like without Katy ISD? What other factors contribute to a stable financial picture for the greater area? What do you think is lacking?

    Katy ISD officials have presented a $561.9 million preliminary budget for the 2010-2011 school year with the same tax rate as last year.

    “This represents no tax rate increase at all,” Katy Superintendent Alton Frailey said during a July 19 school board meeting.

    Last year there were several instances when students brought weapons on to campuses in Katy ISD. Those items included at least one gun, knife,a BB gun and a box cutter. Now the school district is banning lockers at one of its middle schools.

    A simple majority is needed to pass a school referendum in Katy ISD that could exceed $459 million. It would help pay for new schools, repair aging facilities and other projects.

    If there were a vote today, would the bond pass? How many of you would vote for this package?

    After making changes in response to feedback from the public, a bond task force is poised to recommend a $459.8 million package to the Katy ISD school board Monday.

    What are the best ways for the district and the bond task force to sell this to the public? Is there anything in this package that shouldn't be or are there items excluded that you would like to see included?

    Some residents in the Wolfe attendance zone are pushing to have the school rebuilt as a K-8 facility instead of the K-5 facility endorsed by a school bond committee.

    Is this about having a neighborhood junior high school or just elitism at play?

    The public will have an opportunity to weigh in on the proposal during a Tuesday hearing to be held in the Education Support Complex. A survey will be posted on the district’s Web site: www.katyisd.org.
