Pro Baseball: Eugene Macalalag Espineli, Fresno Grizzlies

Eugene Macalalag Espineli pitched two innings, striking out one and allowing two earned runs Monday in the Fresno Grizzlies's 10-5 loss at the Reno Aces. Espineli graduated from Katy Taylor High School.

Espineli is a 2001 graduate of Taylor High School before going on to play college baseball at both the University of Texas and Texas Christian University. As a freshman (2002) Espineli played on the Longhorns team that won the College World Series. He went 5-0 on the season with a 2.08 ERA in 17 appearances (four starts.) Espineli struck out 39 in 52 innings. During his sophomore season (2003) at Texas Espineli went 2-1 with a 5.19 ERA in 17 games eight of which were starts while throwing only 34.2 innings on the season. He transferred to TCU for his junior campaign (2004) and went 9-5 with a 4.63 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 20 appearances 16 starts for the Horned Frogs. Following his junior season Espineli was drafted in the 14th round (430th overall) of the 2004 Major League Baseball draft by the San Francisco Giants. Espineli was born Sept. 8 1982 in Houston.
