    webwombat.comwebwombat.comCongress has passed new legislation that will extend the deadline to close on a home beyond June 30 and still receive the $8,000 first time homebuyer credit or the $6,500 existing homebuyer tax credit. The new deadline to close is September 30.

    But this only applies to purchases already under contract on or before April 30.

    The average rate for a 30 year fixed loan sank to 4.69% this week according to Freddie Mac. Rates are at the lowest point since Freddie Mac began keeping records in 1971. Mortgage rates are actually at their lowest point since the 1950s.

    The volume, or number of single family homes sold, went up 19.1 percent in May 2010 compared to May 2009. This large jump in economic activity can be attributed, at least in part, to the homebuyer tax credit.

    In the city of Katy, overall taxable values decreased by 3.01 percent.

    The projected Katy Independent School District taxable value for 2010 is down 2.36 percent from 2009. When it comes to residential taxable value, however, numbers are up a little. In 2009, the average taxable value of a residential property in KISD was $137,361. This year, it’s $137,609.

    “Katy is one of the strong areas of the county,” said Harris County's assistant chief appraiser Guy Griscom.

    Your help is sought in solving a cold case involving a real estate agent who was found murdered in Katy more than two decades ago.

    Ester Collins was found in a home on Nov. 6, 1987 -- she had been bound, gagged and stabbed, police said.

    Sales of single family homes in the greater Houston area were up 26.7 percent for April 2010 compared to April 2009.
