VFW Post 9182 remembers Korean War Armistice
published Aug. 9, 2012
VFW Post 9182 in Katy held a remembrance for the 59th anniversary of the Korean Armistice.
The cease-fire agreement that ended the Korean War was signed on July 27, 1953. Five Korean War veterans from VFW Post 9182 were honored, sharing their experiences in what has come to be known as "The Forgotten War."
The honorees were Joe Reynolds, Charlie White, Todd Spiller, Louis Mehr and Duane Offe. Each spoke of their personal war experiences, including conditions that often dipped down to 30 degrees below zero and the life-altering interactions they made across the globe.
Mehr spoke of meeting the Boston Red Sox great Ted Williams, and White touched on the unusual cigarette trade between American and Chinese soldiers shortly following the cease-fire.
VFW Post 9182's Commander Dave Brasell noted in his opening for the remembrance that Korea is the only nation to ever formally thank the United States for military assistance, sharing a copy of the Korean Armistice that recognizes the American efforts. He also noted that a peace agreement has never been signed between the opposing forces.
VFW Post 9182 holds meetings at the VFW Hall at 7:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. For more information on the group, contact Brasell at 281-391-8387.
