Encourage youths to develop talent
Artists and art assistants are invited to share their time and talent with children ages 6-14 at a Refugee Resettlement Camp in Fort Bend. Volunteers who are gifted in art, dance, music, drama, or storytelling are asked to spend time once a week to work with youths. The application process includes a background check.
Monitor care in area nursing homes
Serve as ombudsman for a health agency monitoring the quality of care at Greater Houston area nursing homes. Volunteers must have good communication skills and a concern for the well-being of the elderly and disabled. Training and certification will be provided.
Help build houses for low-income families
Provide general construction help for a housing program serving Katy and neighboring areas. Volunteers with no background in construction, can be easily trained to participate in this initiative. Morning and afternoon shifts are available on Saturdays.
Musicians invited to care center
Afternoon music stimulates and delights seniors at an Alzheimer’s special care center in Katy. People skilled at the piano, guitar, or organ are invited to play weekdays at 3, 4 or 6 p.m.
Care for those who have terminal illness
Care and consolation are provided to terminally ill people and their families through a hospice program serving Katy and surrounding areas. Volunteers with the program’s multidisciplinary support team will Volunteers will be a friend and resource to a patient. during the final stages of illness and counsel with family members after the patient’s death. Training is provided.
Teen-support agency wants to recycle items
Support recycling as a volunteer for a group that provides help, healing, and hope to troubled teens. Help by taking things it can no longer use to recycling centers in the Katy area. Volunteers must be 16 or older and be able to do a moderate amount of lifting. Weekday assignments are available.
Help sports foundation with various needs
A Katy foundation provides sports camp programs and needs help with data entry and word processing, filing, answering the telephone, and assisting with special projects. Weekly two-hour shifts can be arranged for weekdays.
Mentor teens
A Katy social service agency can pair mentors with a boy or girl who will benefit from their companionship and guidance. Training will be provided. Mentors are needed weekdays, 3 to 7 p.m., and weekends from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Volunteers should be at least 21 years of age.
