Girls basketball: Taylor loaded for another deep run
The Katy Taylor girls basketball program finally arrived last season. The graduated Amanda Jungwirth won consecutive district MVP awards in her final two years, helping the Lady Mustangs win a school-record 32 games and advance to the third round of the playoffs. Despite looking like the prototypical college athlete, she opted to forego any basketball or volleyball in favor of her studies. The only other graduated player is reserve guard Jordan Miller, leaving plenty in the cupboard for Villafone to work with, including the other four starters from last season. Johnson, the reigning district defensive player of the year, will continue to carry the defensive torch. The other returning starter is 5-foot-11 senior post Holly Ray, who has the difficult task of replacing Jungwirth's inside production. "Because we've lost some size with Amanda, we don't want to get into halfcourt matches with people, so if we can keep up-tempo paces it suits us well," Villafone said.
