Katy man charged with having sex with teen arrested in Colorado
A Katy man accused of having sex with a minor is in jail and awaiting extradition from Colorado to Texas, according to a news release from the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.
Matthew Kinsel, 29, is charged with sexual assault of a child. He was arrested Thursday, Feb. 9 in Durango, Colo., where a spokesman for the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office said he was taken into custody without incident after the agency received the Texas arrest warrant.
Fort Bend detectives had notified La Plata authorities that they believed Kinsel had fled to that area of Colorado, where his parents live, while he was being investigated by that agency and the Austin County Sheriff’s Office for allegedly having an ongoing relationship with a 14-year-old girl.
The girl’s family notified Austin County authorities Feb. 2 that their daughter was involved in a sexual relationship with Kinsel. Austin County, in turn, notified Fort Bend detectives, who went to Kinsel’s apartment in Katy Monday, Feb. 6, only to find that he had left the area.
The girl’s family told detectives the teenager sneaked out of her house at night after everyone else was asleep. Kinsel then allegedly picked her up at the house and took her to his apartment, where the assaults purportedly took place.
Sexual assault of a child is a second-degree felony, for which Kinsel — if convicted — could be sentenced from two to 20 years in prison, fined up to $10,000 or receive both a fine and prison term.
