Mall thefts, criminal trespass top report
Thefts from cars and stores in and around Katy Mills Mall, and a case of criminal trespass were reported to the Katy Police Department this week.
Police arrested Ritu Torres, 33, of Houston February 7 on charges of Class B theft after loss prevention officers at Neiman Marcus reported seeing an individual removing about $260 worth of clothing from the store without paying. Torres was booked into the Fort Bend County jail, said Assistant Police Chief Tim Tyler of the Katy Police Department.
On February 4, police arrested three teenagers from out of town after the Zumiez store in Katy Mills Mall reported seeing them leaving the store without paying for items of wearing apparel. Koby Morris of Weimar, 17; Jesse Tello of Schulenberg, 18; and Caleb Pierce of Schulenburg, 17, were arrested for Class C theft.
Police also responded to a complaint about a laptop stolen from a car at the mall on February 2. The case was suspended for lack of evidence, however, Tyler said.
Tyler said thieves smashed the right rear window of a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and removed the computer. Without an eye-witness account, a license plate or fingerprints, however, police didn't have much to work with, he said.
Don't leave your valuables in your car," Tyler said. We preach that all the time, but people still do it."
Katy police also were called to a house in the 2800 block of Cottonwood Drive February 6, after the homeowner heard a slamming door and sounds of breaking glass around 12:40 a.m. Police reported the suspect was inside the residence, throwing miscellaneous items onto the ground. Vikki Evans, 52, of Katy was arrested for Class B criminal trespass and Class B criminal mischief. She was taken to the Harris County Jail, Tyler said.
