Texas Summer Reading Club cracks open its books

Registration from the Texas Summer Reading Club opens May 29.

Children of all ages are invited to come out to any Fort Bend County Library to sign up for the 54th anniversary of the reading club.

According to a press release, participants are encouraged to read as many books as they can to earn rewards based on the total number of books they have read or had read to them.

"Research shows that children who are read to from an early age have a larger vocabulary and better language skills when they start school," said Susan King, coordinator of youth services at Fort Bend County Libraries. "Children who want to have books read to them are more likely to want to learn to read. You can give your child a life-long advantage if you start now to develop a love for books and reading. Children who are good readers are usually the most successful learners. That's why we invite parents to enroll their children, as young as possible, in the Summer Reading Club."

Participants can register at any Fort Bend County Library or go to www.fortbend.lib.tx.us and click on "Youth SRC Sign-Up" anytime on or after May 29.

After registering, participants will be given their own online page to record the books they've read. Reading rewards can be redeemed beginning June 4. For the first five books read, participants will receive a book mark. The rewards continue with a pencil, certificate, trophy and more. The last day to collect awards is Aug. 25.

Younger readers can also register to win plush book characters that will be given away in weekly drawings. The names of all participants will be put into a drawing for gift cards from area stores.
