Local students win scholarships for emergency response training
Four seniors from the Spring, Waller, North Forest and Katy school districts were awarded with $1,000 scholarships for being skilled in emergency response, leadership, bravery and grades.
Stephanie Maribel Ramirez of Carl Wunsche High School; Rosa Elena Chavez of Waller High School; Barbara Reyes of North Forest High School; and Eternal Lokumbe of Cinco Ranch High School were awarded the scholarships as part of Judge Ed Emmett’s Harris County Citizens Corp, coordinated through Harris County Department of Education.
The winners wrote essays that were judged along with academic records and letters of reference from teachers. The winners are part of Teen CERT, in which teens learn how to put out fires, treat triage accident victims, perform search-and-rescue tactics and assist in disaster relief.
The students were awarded the scholarships during a ceremony on May 4 at HCDE in Houston.
