Katy group touts 'Book Alive!' literacy program
The Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center wants to show Houston-area children the best of theater and literacy through a program called "Book Alive!"
The program gathers children ages 3-8 to watch a professional musical play based on a children's book followed by academic workshops that encourage kids to read more.
More than 60 schools and organizations, including libraries and children's hospitals, participated in Book Alive last year, according to KVPAC officials.
Officials looking to book should book early for fall 2012 and spring 2013. Free previews are available for teachers, school administrators, librarians and PTA officials upon request.
Funding for the program is provided by the Texas Commission of the Arts, the Houston Arts Alliance and Target, according to KVPAC Outreach Director Kristin Miller.
