New technology at CHRISTUS to aid heart patients

St. Catherine Hospital is adding a new way to detect heart disease.

Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death of Americans for both men and women, studies suggest. Doctors are always searching for new ways to detect cardiovascular risks early to give their patients the best possible outcome.

Dr. Aleksandra Lawera, a physician at CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital, now offers a new test called EndoPat to her patients. The EndoPat is an easy, quick and non-invasive way to test for endothelial dysfunction.

A recent study by the Mayo Clinic shows patients with endothelial dysfunction had 300 percent more adverse cardiovascular events than those patients with normal endothelial function. The endothelium is the inner layer of blood vessels, including those feeding the heart itself.  It is the site of gradual calcium deposits that eventually can lead to heart disease. Unlike cardiovascular disease, endothelial dysfunction is fully reversible in its early stages with proper management.

“Being able to accurately assess endothelial function, Dr. Lawera can better stratify her patients’ risks for heart attacks, strokes and customize treatment plans accordingly,” said Dr. Jose Diez, interventional cardiologist at CHRISTUS ST. Catherine Hospital, in a press release. “She is giving her practice and patients a 21st century advantage against heart disease.”

EndoPat testing is recommended for those with high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated cholesterol and who are smokers.
