U.S. Congressman John Culberson, representative for the Texas' Seventh District, announced 12 local students accepted to U.S. Service academies.

Appointees to the U.S. Air Force Academy from the Seventh District include Johnathan Eno from Langham Creek High School, Erica Lewandwski from Jersey Village High School and Travis Ryan from Episcopal High School.

Kathry Quandt from Houston Christian High School and Steven Doan from Bellaire High School will attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

U.S. Military Academy at West Pointe appointees include Mariah Caid-Loos and Marissa Caid Loos from Lamar High School, Travis Peterson from Cypress Lakes High School and Brock Davidson from Memorial High School.

Receiving appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy are John Wesely, Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School, Zachary Zalomski from Cy Falls High School and William Gerrit Porter from Lamar High School.

“Each year I am honored to nominate the best of the best to our nation’s prestigious service academies,” said Rep. Culberson in a press release announcing the appointees. “The young men and women that dedicate their lives to service are among the most honorable and brave. I commend this year’s class and wish them the very best in their training and service to our great nation.”

Students attend these four-year academies prior to completing their required terms of service. The Air Force, Naval and Military Academies are all operated by the Department of Defense, while the Merchant Marines are operated by the Department of Transportation.

Men and women between the ages of 17-22 may apply for a nomination. All candidates must pass a physical aptitude test and a medical fitness examination, meet minimum scholastic requirements and be scheduled graduate high school before July 1, 2013.

To receive an application packet, Seventh District residents may send a written request, including full name, address, telephone number and signature, to Rep Culberson's District Office to the attention of Academy Nominations, 10000 Memorial Drive, Suite 620, Houston, TX 77024.

Applications for the Class of 2017 must be completed by Oct. 15, 2012. Interviews will be scheduled for Dec. 1, 2012.
