Katy's graduates impact local economy

Graduates of the Katy Independent School District are expected to have a significant impact on the Houston area economy throughout their lifetimes, according to a recent study by the Alliance for Excellent Education.

According to the press release, the 4,083 high school seniors that graduated in 2012 from the district's six high schools are estimated to earn as much as $60 million more in an average year, compared to earnings they would have made if they had not earned a high school diploma. By the middle of their careers, they are estimated to purchase homes totaling in value as much as $87 million, more than what they would have spent without a diploma. Moreover, they are expected to spend an additional $3.2 million, combined, in vehicle purchases during an average year.

The spending and investments are estimated to support as many as 360 new jobs in the Houston area, increase the gross regional/state product by as much as $56 million by the time they reach their career midpoints, and increase federal, state and local tax revenues by as much as $13 million during an average year.
