Houston duo reaches quarters of USTA national doubles tourney
The duo of Houston's Xavier Gonzalez and Peter Leung advanced to the Doubles Quarterfinals in the United States Tennis Association's Boys 16 National Championships.
The full tournament was held from Aug. 2 to Aug. 6 at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich. Players competed in Boys 16 Singles, Boys 18 Singles, Boys 16 Doubles and Boys 18 Doubles divisions.
The duo bested four other teams, including the seeded team of Hampton Drake and Christian Langmo, to reach quarterfinals play.
Their chances for semi-final action were ended by the Tallahassee twin duo of Terrance and Terrell Whitehurst in a 7-6, 6-3 loss. The Whitehursts took fourth place in the 16 Doubles brackets.
The team of Daniel Kerznerman and Henrik Wiersholm topped Aron Hiltzik and Paul Oosterbaan to take the 16 Doubles Championship in a 6-2, 7-5 bout. Past Boys 16 Doubles National Champions include John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, Sammy Giammalva and Mike Russell.
Both Gonzalez and Leung are high school juniors in the area. Leung attends Katy Taylor High School and Gonzalez goes to St. John's School.
