Nottingham Country Garden Club to meet

The Nottingham Country Garden Club will have its next meeting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at the Municipal Utility Building #81 in Katy.

The session will feature Sam Guardiola and Mike Frismanis speaking about composting and worms, according to a club release.

Everyone interested in gardening and gardening-related areas from West Houston and the Katy area are welcome to attend. Participants do not have to live in Nottingham Country to belong to the organization.

Christmas Light Show, food drive  now under way

Cottage Charm of Katy, the Thom Polvogt Agency Group and the McKenzie Group have teamed up to present the 2012 Christmas Light Show and food drive in Katy.

The light display is now open each evening at a historical home built in 1905, located in downtown Katy at 5806 Fourth St. The food drive will benefit Katy Christian Ministries, according to a Cottage Charm press release.

The light show will run through Thursday, Jan. 3, and will be available seven days a week from 6-11 p.m. and repeat every 15 minutes.

The location will feature a low-watt radio signal to play the music for the presentation’s background, and a computer and software program, 80 individual light channels and miles of wire and lights will provide the visual dimensions of the program.

Visitors will be able to listen to the music on their car radios at 89.9 FM.

The show is free of charge, but visitors are asked to bring a can of food that will be passed along to Katy Christian Ministry, a local charity for the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Church of Christ plans events, shoe and clothing drive 

The Cinco Ranch Church of Christ is planning several holiday events this season.

The Cinco Kids Christmas Play will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, and at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 16. Cookies and lemonade will be served after the show Dec. 15.

The Soles4Souls Shoe Drive and Souls4Clothes Clothing Drive will take place Sunday, Dec. 16. People are encouraged to donate new and gently used shoes at the Christmas Play. Clothing items will also be accepted and should be clean, free of stains and holes and in tied garbage bags.

The Almost New Years Eve Party will run from 6-10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to celebrate the coming of the new year by playing games, enjoying snacks, going on a picture scavenger hunt around Katy and watching fireworks. The cost is $20 per child, and registration is required.

Local groups plant trees at Katy VFW Park

The Katy chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Star of Destiny, recently partnered with Keep Katy Beautiful and the Katy Boy Scout Troop 584 to plant trees at Katy VFW Park.

The groups planted 11 burr oaks in the park Saturday, Dec. 1, according to a press release.

The trees were donated by the Apache Corporation and were planted in selected locations on the acreage. Star of Destiny Regent Trish Cook offered a prayer at the commencement of the planting.

St. Peter’s announces upcoming events 

St. Peter’s United Methodist Church is planning a number of events.

Treasures in the Attic will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, in Lott Hall. Children will have the opportunity to shop for gifts for their families. In order to be allowed to shop, each child must donate an item for missions. The store currently includes jewelry, cosmetic samples, ornaments, gently used wallets, key chains, small toys and wrapping supplies, according to a church press release.

The Jingle Jam Concert, St. Peter’s Christmas celebration, will run from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, in Lott Hall. Families will gather to decorate cookies, create ornaments and enjoy Christmas music from Thad Brown and the element band. Guests are welcome.

The Chancel Choir, Orchestra and Carillon Handbell Choir Concert will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 in the Sanctuary. The concert will last one hour and feature familiar Christmas carols and handbell choir selections. The final piece will be “A Manger Suite,” featuring the Chancel Choir, Orchestra and Children’s Choirs.
